Fourth, a healing period during which the implant integrates with the surrounding bone. Finally, the restorative phase, when the crown, bridge or prosthesis is made and fitted. Some swelling and tenderness around the surgical site in the days following placement is normal, and is managed with the aftercare instructions and any medication your clinician provides. Many patients return to routine activities within a few days, although this varies with the extent of the surgery. The implant then needs time to integrate with the bone before it can carry a final restoration, which is why implant treatment is generally staged over months rather than completed in a single visit. Where a temporary tooth is appropriate, it is discussed as part of the plan so you are not left with a visible gap.
Implants are intended as a long-term tooth replacement, and how long they last depends heavily on what happens after treatment.
